What are the different types of interpreting?

There are two main types of interpreting in the languages sector: conference interpreting and liaison interpreting. Each can be used in a variety of contexts and at different kinds of events, but what is the difference between them and which approach is best for which situation?

Conference interpreting

As its name suggests, this service is ideal for conferences, colloquia, general assemblies, congresses, etc. Two different techniques can be used:

  • Consecutive: the interpreter repeats what has been said in the target language at regular intervals, or at the end of part of a speech. This can require the speaker to structure their speech by allowing regular pauses for the interpreter(s) to translate.
  • Simultaneous: the interpreter sits in an interpreting booth with headphones and a microphone, where they repeat what has been said in the target language in real time, with no pauses. Depending on the client’s needs, they can also sit next to the person requiring a translation and whisper. This option is well-suited to small groups.

Liaison interpreting

With this kind of interpreting, the interpreter is integrated into the group (which is generally smaller than in the case of conference interpreting) and translates what has been said into the target language smoothly and accurately. This technique has the advantage of being very flexible and can be used in a wide range of contexts, such as meetings and seminars; guided tours; official visits; negotiations, interviews, etc.

And that’s not all…!

Our interpreting services are flexible and adaptable, making them suitable for almost any kind of event. While interpreting inherently requires a little more forward planning–to assess the client’s needs and ensure the right equipment is available and that the interpreters can be booked for the dates required–the industry is constantly evolving and the development of new technologies has led to the emergence of new services. One such example is distance interpreting, which is an online solution that has grown in popularity in recent years because of its convenience, allowing high-quality interpreting to be provided with fewer logistical constraints.
